wow - special occassion wine

Special occassions like, say, an anniversary, deserve something special to sip. Two ways to do that: pull something from the cellar or pick a special bottle from the shelf or wine list. Tonight we popped a bottle of 1994 Gran Reserva tempranillo from Torre de Oria. Not a true Rioja as it sits outside that region of Spain, this beauty sure had me fooled. Well worth the $40 price tag and 8 year wait. When is your next occasion for a special bottle?

Mmmmm... in Spain we have a whole range of what we call "denominaciones de origen": A name that involves the wines coming from a certain area fulfilling certain quality requirements... Torre Oria is a wine from Valencia and obviously is not a Rioja, but an Utiel. What shocks me is the sentence "Not a true Rioja as it sits outside that region of Spain"... do you use Rioja as a synonyme for red wine or as it was some kind of "cabernet", "merlot", "chardonay"?

Yes, I have heard "Rioja" as a synonym for Spanish tempranillo so thought it worth pointing out Torre Oria is not from Rioja despite the similarities (including the gold wire on the bottle normally reserved for Rioja wines). Regional naming of wines common in Europe is often confusing to U.S. consumers accustomed to varietal designations so I enjoy pointing out when less known regions and/or makers produce wines similar in quality to better known areas or makers.

I see your point. I've always found varietal designtions weird... even if regional names involve a certain kind of grape or certain mix of them.

I know Rioja has a name abroad but in the last years new regions are making excelent wines. Rivera de Duero seems to be a bit "out of fashion" right now, but still really good. But personally, nothing compares to a good strong red TORO wine...
